Hacker Steals Sensitive HPE Data:

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) is under inquiry after claims by a hacker, operating under a false name “IntelBroker,” who claims to have stolen sensitive data. The hacker posted details of the breach on a popular cybercrime forum, claiming the stolen information includes product source code, private GitHub repositories, and access keys for various HPE services, including APIs. The breach extends beyond HPE, hackers allegedly breached technology companies such as AMD , Cisco and Nokia by accessing HPE user data, including compromising personally identifiable information about past deliveries.

HPE Responds:

In a statement to TechCrunch, HPE spokesperson Laura von Pentz confirmed that the company was made aware of the claims on January 16. She said, “HPE became aware on January 16 of claims being made by a group called IntelBroker that it was in possession of information belonging to HPE. HPE immediately activated our cyber response protocols, disabled related credentials, and launched an investigation to evaluate the validity of the claims. There is no operational impact to our business at this time, nor evidence that customer information is involved.”

HPE’s History with Breaches:

Despite many queries, HPE refused to disclose the manner in which its data was compromised. On the other hand, IntelBroker, who was implied to be selling the data stolen from HPE, has not responded, leaving many details about the alleged breach unconfirmed. Nearly a year ago, HPE reported that its cloud-based email environment had been breached by Midnight Blizzard, an organization associated with Russia. Google Stance on European Union Fact-checking Mandates

Google acts upon fact-checking commitments:

Google has informed the European Union that it will not involve work from any fact-checking organizations in Search or YouTube until it expands its disinformation laws under the EU plans. Previously, Google voluntarily accepted certain commitments promoted by the European Union in 2022 to improve measures against online disinformation, to now become a law under the Digital Services Act (DSA). As, major US tech companies provide the preferred practices for the elected President Donald Trump, both Tim Cook and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg seem to be willing to disrupt the international order and join their forces with Trump against EU regulatory measures. In a letter to Renate Nikolay, director for content and technology at the European Commission, Kent Walker, Google’s president of global affairs, announced his decision that “Google will not comply with this requirement, as it would simply be inappropriate and ineffective for our services.” Walker also noted that Google would withdraw from all fact-checking commitments listed in the Code before the DSA Code of Conduct becomes law.

 European Union Code of Practice on Disinformation:

The European Union Code of Practice on Disinformation calls on the signatories to work with fact-checkers from across the EU, providing evidence of their activity in all EU languages and to reduce financial incentives to spread disinformation on their platforms. It will require companies to improve transparency and facilitate the ability of the users to identify, understand, and report disinformation while producing common formats for political advertising and investigating fake accounts, bots, and other harmful platforms. However, these commitments do not have the force of law. Fact-checking is not a current part of Google’s content moderation schemes and they have rejected certain code requirements in the agreement as, YouTube and Search will try to reach agreements with fact-checking organizations in line with this measure but services will not have complete control over this process.

Future of EU and Tech platforms:

A total of 40 online platforms that signed the code included Microsoft, TikTok, Twitch, and Meta as they discontinued their fact-checking program in the US earlier this month. Twitter (now rebranded as X) did sign the code, but it later withdrew from it after Elon Musk purchased the platform. According to the European Fact-Checking Standards Network (EFCSN), most of the other digital platforms which signed the voluntary disinformation code have not bothered to ensure that their pledges are honoured. The EU lawmakers have been in discussions with the signatories over which of the commitments they would be willing to follow. It is yet to be announced by the Commission as to when the code will be officially law because it was, in November, expected by January 2025.

Logistics and Technical challenges made project scaling unfeasible.

Plan B: Decided to address a different EV-relevant issue: Improving Wifi connectivity at charging points, which often disrupts due to poor signal strength.

This decision led to the following positive aspects:

TSMC’s US Plant Unlikely to Get Latest Chip Tech before Taiwan, CEO says

TSMC’s new U.S. plant in Arizona is unlikely to receive the most advanced chip technology before the company’s factories in Taiwan due to various regulatory, compliance, and local construction challenges, according to TSMC’s CEO, C.C. Wei.

Wei highlighted that building the Arizona facility has taken much longer than expected, at least double the time it took to construct plants in Taiwan. This delay, he explained, is due to complex permitting processes and the need for strict compliance at every stage. As a result, it will be difficult for TSMC to implement its latest chip technology in the U.S. before it is deployed in Taiwan.

TSMC, a key supplier of advanced chips to companies like Apple, is investing $65 billion in three large-scale factories in Arizona, aiming to boost the U.S.’s semiconductor production capabilities. However, TSMC has stated that the majority of its chip production will continue to take place in Taiwan.

Despite facing several challenges, including cost overruns, Wei expressed confidence that the Arizona facility would produce chips of the same quality as its Taiwanese counterparts. He is optimistic about the progress of the plant as it ramps up production.

The Arizona project has been delayed further by a shortage of skilled labor, supply chain disruptions, and the lack of established regulations for chip manufacturing plants in the U.S. TSMC has had to create 18,000 new regulations at a cost of $35 million, hiring experts to work with local authorities to address these issues.

Additionally, the cost of chemicals required for chip production in the U.S. is significantly higher than in Taiwan. As a result, TSMC has been forced to ship chemicals like sulfuric acid from Taiwan to Los Angeles, before trucking them to Arizona. The company has also had to relocate workers from Texas to Arizona to address labor shortages, further driving up costs.

Despite these hurdles, the U.S. government has been a strong supporter of the investment, offering a $6.6 billion grant to assist with TSMC’s efforts to diversify semiconductor production outside of Asia. U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo recently confirmed that TSMC has already begun producing 4-nanometer chips for U.S. customers at the Arizona facility, marking a significant step in the country’s push for semiconductor self-sufficiency.

However, it lost communication with the Starship rocket after about 9 minutes into the flight. One of the SpaceX senior managers for quality said, “We can confirm that we did lose the ship.”SpaceX further shared that the ship was broken during the ascent as they continue to review data from the test light to understand the root cause. It is believed that the ship developed fire that resulted in test flight failure, but the findings were still going on at the moment.

Social Media Reaction and Debris in the Atlantic Ocean

Many users on social media posted private photos and videos of what appeared to be a fireball created by the test flight incident near the Caribbean islands. Space X also said that the debris from the resulting incident fell into the Atlantic Ocean, but thankfully, it was within the predefined hazard areas.

The SEC wants to impose civil penalties to return these apparent gains among other things. Musk’s lawyer, Alex Spiro, called it a weak attempt by the SEC to redeem itself, accusing the agency of a years-long harassment campaign. Musk has echoed those sentiments before when he rejected a settlement offer from the SEC. it will be up to a federal court to decide whether the SEC’s allegation is valid and whether to impose a penalty on Musk.

Watch Duty is an app that must be familiar to the residents of  Los Angeles due to its ability to provide the latest information related to wildfires. The app is free and is said to include reports on fire evacuation zones, air quality, and wind patterns, which have become an important tool for such individuals as firefighters and even residents during emergencies. Watch Duty is like a breath of fresh air among tech products as it is ad-free, data tracking-free, and does not bother about increasing user engagement. Over the last few days, it has gained more than a million downloads as it is designed to get rapid and accurate alerts for the sake of user safety. The thought behind Watch Duty came up in 2020 when co-founder John Mills was defending his off-grid residence during the Walbridge fire. Within sixty days, Mills along with David Merritt, Watch Duty’s co-founder and CTO, they were able to build the app.

Volunteer Journalists at Watch Duty keep a constant eye on scanners updating the app in real-time for evacuation orders and firefighting efforts. Every piece of information gets verified for accuracy and relevance. The application has grown to cover around 22 states, aiming for nationwide and eventually international reach. According to Merritt, “It is a utility that everyone should have, which is timely, relevant information for their safety during emergencies. Right now, it’s very scattered. Even the agencies themselves, which have the best intentions, their hands are tied by bureaucracy or contracts. We partner with government sources with a focus on firefighting.” Watch Duty plans to expand this service and other emergency services across the United States along with other countries to eventually save millions of people from the slow, often unreliable local government alert systems.

Microsoft Files Suit Against Hundreds for Abuse of Azure OpenAI Services

Microsoft has now joined the growing ranks of legal claims bordering on what has been described as “abuse of its AI services” by stealing and, thus, “piercing” critical safety measures on the platform. The 10 Doe defendants, unnamed in the suit, purportedly committed theft of user credentials and access to Microsoft Azure OpenAI.

API Key Theft and Hacking-as-a-Service

As per Microsoft, the defendants systematically and through their deceitful acts stole API keys, the fundamental means of authentication to its AI services. The hacked accounts were allegedly pivotal in creating an act of “hacking-as-a-service” One main ingredient for that operation would be De3u, a software that enabled one to convert images synthesized by OpenAI’s DALL-E without the necessity of writing an actual code.

The company’s complaint also mentioned that De3u is preferable as it can bypass Azure OpenAI’s content moderation system hence making it possible to generate malicious and illegal content. Microsoft is alleging that both bright and dark worlds have been breached by the acts of the defendants into violations of various statutes such as the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, as well as federal racketeering laws.

Microsoft’s Counteroffensive and Legal Action

Microsoft stated that the misuse of its API keys was discovered in July 2024, and steps were taken to remedy this situation. Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI is apparently in distress as he stated that due to the unexpected excessive ChatGPT Pro usage, they are facing immense loss on its 200$ per month ChatGPT Pro Plan. Altman in one of his recent posts on X stated, “I determined the cost and figured that we would earn money.” This implies a lack of strategy and long-term vision, as a ChatGPT-powered AI chat box did not have a completely structured pricing plan that could be followed. This is not the first time OpenAI swiftly set its pricing structures without considering them in detail.

ChatGPT Pro emerged a year ago and enchanted its users with various features, such as unlimited access to the o1 reasoning AI Model with o1 professional mode and even access to Sora, a video-generating tool made by the OpenAI squad.

Is ChatGPT Pro worth $2,400 a year?

The fact that ChatGPT Pro was primarily criticized for being too expensive lies in the idea of it being considered mainstream. The annual fee of about $2,400 is quite a hefty price, especially when the worth of o1 pro mode at least has not been established. As per Altman’s tweets, those who chose this plan are just heavy grey users consuming the service to its max. Altman, in one of his latest interviews with Bloomberg, recognized that the markup for ChatGPT was charged in the beginning without conducting any research. He said, we considered $20 and $42 as two possible prices and they went with $20 because $42 was believed to be too much, it was not a thoughtful plan and a snap decision towards the end of December 2022 or the start of January.

OpenAI’s Lofty Revenue Targets

After garnering cumulatively around $20 billion since its startup, OpenAI continues to experience a loss of around $5 billion on revenue of $3.7 billion. To become profitable, the company is believed to be increasing subscription fees, and some services may be transitioned into usage-based pricing. In the future, OpenAI intends to reach $100 billion in revenue in 2029.
